9. Nurses in Crisis (Trigger Warning)
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses suicide, crisis and mental health.
Nurses in Crisis:
- Your mental health matters.
- One doctor commits suicide in the U.S. every day -- the highest suicide rate of any profession. And the number of doctor suicides -- 28 to 40 per 100,000 -- is more than twice that of the general population, new research shows. The rate in the general population is 12.3 per 100,000.
- Within the health care community, [women] nurses were found to be roughly 70% more likely to die by suicide than [women] doctors.
- Suicide incidence among nurses was 17.1 per 100,000, compared to 8.6 per 100,000 among women in the general public, meaning that nurses experience double the risk of suicide as women in the general public.
- If you're in crisis with suicidal or homicidal ideation:
- Use the Crisis Text Line – a 24/7 crisis support for frontline health workers from trained crisis responders. In the USA – Text “HOME” to 741741
- Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1 800-273-TALK
- Call 911
- If you're struggling but not in crisis, consider these interventions:
- Hire a therapist
- Hire a coach
- Reach out to a friend
- Talk with your boss
- Use your Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Build community
